Bagi seorang pemuda berusia 32 tahun kelahiran Kuala Lumpur, jendela imannya dikuak ketika mula-mula masuk ke gerbang institusi pengajian tinggi.
Tay Eng Soon mengakui hatinya diketuk untuk mempelajari Islam pada usia 18 tahun apabila melihat rakan Melayu di tempat pengajiannya berpuasa di bulan Ramadan kira-kira 14 tahun lalu.
“Saya mula bertanya kepada diri saya kenapa orang Islam berpuasa dan kenapa perlu puasa. Mereka (rakan saya) cerita mengenai berpuasa dan selepas itu saya minat untuk cuba berpuasa dan ikut rakan-rakan berpuasa.
“Saya tanya mereka juga tentang Islam, kenapa perlu solat, ketika itu rakan-rakan saya sudi jawab soalan saya dan cerita tentang Islam, tentang nabi-nabi,” katanya dalam wawancara bersama Malaysiakini baru-baru ini.
Ketika ditemui, Tay sedang mengikuti Kelas Fardu Ain Anjuran Lembaga Zakat Selangor (LZS) di Masjid Bukit Indah Ampang.
Kahwini gadis Melayu
Tay mengambil masa selama lebih tujuh tahun untuk mendalami Islam sehingga hatinya sendiri mengakui bahawa Allah merupakan tuhan yang esa.
Namun, beliau tidak tahu bilakah masa sesuai untuknya memeluk agama itu sehinggalah seorang ustaz bertanya kepadanya.
Akhirnya dorongan itu menjadi bertambah kuat apabila hatinya terpaut dengan seorang gadis Melayu.
"Isteri saya Melayu, jadi kalau nak kahwin orang Islam, kena masuk Islam.
“Tapi masa tu pun saya ragu-ragu lagi sebab saya tahu keluarga saya tidak akan suka, akhirnya ibu mentua saya tanya, jika mahu teruskan perkahwinan saya memang kena masuk Islam.
“Jadi saya cakap dalam diri saya, inilah masanya untuk saya teruskan perjalanan hidup dan menjadi seorang Islam, saya lafazkan syahadah pada Julai 2012, sebelum Ramadan,” katanya terharu.
Namun di sebalik kegembiraannya, Tay berhadapan halangan keluarga yang tidak merestui tindakannya memeluk Islam.
Ibu kepada Tay yang terguris dengan tindakannya pernah mahu menggadaikan semua harta benda asalkan anak lelaki sulungnya itu kembali ke agama asal.
“Bila keluarga saya dapat tahu, mak saya menangis, meraung. Ayah saya marah kerana saya tidak berbincang. Tapi saya tahu kalau saya bagitahu dan bincang, saya tidak akan dapat masuk Islam,” katanya.
Menurut Tay, antara kebimbangan terbesar ibu bapanya jika mereka meninggal dunia kelak, tiada siapa akan melakukan upacara ritual kematian memandangkan dia merupakan anak sulung.
Tak tukar nama Melayu
Tay berkata, dia tidak menukar namanya selepas memeluk Islam antara lain kerana mahu menjaga hati orang tuanya yang beranggapan “masuk Islam seperti masuk Melayu”.
“Ya. Saya boleh cakap begitu. Reaksi ibu bapa saya, habislah saya akan jadi orang Melayu, sampai sekarang pun macam tu. (Tapi) semuanya perlu masa,” katanya.
Ditanya bagaimana merayakan sambutan Tahun Baru Cina, Tay berkata pada tahun pertama agak kekok kerana makan di meja berasingan.
"Mula-mula rasa kekok, sekarang saya dah ok,” katanya.
Ketika Ramadan menjelma saban tahun, Tay berkata, inilah kegembiraan paling nyata yang dicari selama ini.
Beliau juga berharap reda Allah memayungi perjalanan kehidupannya.
